Light At The End Of The Bridge

Updated: Jan 15, 2024

People (and photographers!) are drawn to bridges for various reasons. Whether it is intriguing geometry or a symbol of hope, a bridge literally and figuratively offers a means to get over an obstacle or just to get from here to there—and maybe to where the grass is greener.

Sheri: This bridge is the covered bridge at Stone Mountain Park. Built in 1891 in Athens Ga, it was used for many years to connect its rural farm community with downtown. After damage from floods, it was disassembled and reconstructed at Stone Mountain Park in 1965. I am always drawn to this bridge’s worn flooring, thinking about all the people that have passed through it over the years.

Bill: Why did the chicken run across the bridge? To get to the other side faster, or as I call it, “poultry in motion”.

Ever stand at the open end of a covered bridge and gaze to the other end? You can almost hear it calling out “come on in and walk through.” And as you stroll within, looking for the light, your senses are heightened. You can hear the reverb of nature outside, as if you are inside a large ear trumpet.

As a symbol of hope, bridges are built to get to a better place…you know, like the “Rainbow Bridge” and the bridge in the play “Brigadoon”. Both these bridges promised to lead to a better place.

As we backtracked through the bridge and back to our car, we two photographers were filled with hope that our pictures would turn out just like we imagined…we hope.

Positively Speaking, “Sheri & Bill...Story Tellers in Word, Image and Song.”
