Sheri & Bill's Musical Critters
Sheri & Bill's Musical Critters

There are more holiday traditions than there are last-minute shoppers outside a Wal-Mart on Christmas eve. (come to think of it, "last minute shopping" may be a holiday tradition for some folks!). Traditions are an important way to help us connect to our past, present and future; they help us bond together with family and friends.

Most folks have probably “settled” on their own family holiday traditions. You may remember our article last holiday season “Holiday Traditions Keep Joy Alive” . This year we are focusing on our quirkier holiday traditions.

Sheri: Here’s quirky tradition #1: Every year we add one musical animated creature to our animated musical creature menagerie (the little red one). We used to go on an annual creature hunt, but for the past 5 years, our youngest grandson, TJ, presents us with a new critter just as the holiday season begins. This year’s trophy--a sock monkey in a sled, singing “Sleigh Ride” Who doesn’t need one of these?

Bill: While these are pretty cute critters (check ‘em all out in our pix), it is hard to fully appreciate the deafening noise crescendo when our 4 great grands descend on the critters and activate them simultaneously. Sort of an out-of-control holiday musical song and dance special…no “‘Silent Night” here!

Sheri: Here’s quirky tradition #2: Maybe not so quirky, but we arm each guest with a complementary take home decorative can of 3 flavor popcorn. We tried to drop this tradition a couple years ago and we heard resounding dissonance from all attendees.

Bill: So, we could make it quirky and throw in a popcorn fight this year…any takers?

Sheri: Here’s quirky tradition #3: I think this one is the ultimate quirky tradition. I may be married to the only person still living who LOVES fruitcake. Not kidding here! Every December I search through grocery stores and online to find Bill’s favorite Claxton fruitcake. He eats as much as I buy. (Wait—please don’t send us your unwanted fruitcake!)

Bill: No fruit cake shaming! Fruitcake is an acquired taste of the gods. 😊

And for quirky tradition #4 what about wrapping the 4 great grand kids in the discarded gift paper? No? Ok, ok, maybe not, but what about this year we add back a tradition we dropped off a couple of years ago: Let’s buy lottery tickets and hang one on the tree for each adult at our gathering. Scratch and sniff?

Sheri: Great idea! And speaking of adult gifting, we always do a drawing for just the adults. To make quirky tradition #5, I read a fun twist to this adult gift giving where you sign the gift you are giving as being from someone famous. I mean, who wouldn’t want to receive a t shirt from Bob Dylan or a book from Tom Clancy?”

Whatever your family traditions are, embrace them warmly – and maybe try out a few new ones!  We hope you experience the full sensory overload that only a holiday season filled with family and friends can offer!
