It’s those magical moments when our music connects with another person that has spurred us on our musical journey together. We can tell ourselves our goal is to be better singers, better musicians, better songwriters, etc., and that’s all true, but deep down what we really want is to know that our music is connecting us with others.
“Human interaction… The most complicated form of happiness I will never figure out.” (Charlotte Ericksson)
We have spent many Saturday mornings entertaining at farmers markets. There are always so many people passing by, with many taking the time to stop and enjoy our music, give us kudos and tips, and buy our CD’s. And there is usually one moment during a gig that stands out, one special memorable interaction… such was the case with a man named Merle who stopped by on a visit to our area from Alabama. He introduced himself, thanked us for our music, and then made a request for a song we had never played before. We don’t often perform such requests, knowing it is a risk, without having ever played the song or figured out the best key for our voices and harmonies—or even what chords are in the song! But that morning, we said “ok”…and we nailed it!
As we sang, Merle stood in front of us smiling, but with tears streaming. Turns out the song he requested was his wife’s favorite, and she had just recently passed away. Our rendition that morning allowed him to experience some cherished memories.
The power of music--it opens doors and hearts and connects people.
“Beyond a certain point, the music isn't mine anymore. It's yours”. (Phil Collins)
