“Color me happy” ….” (Sheri & Bill)
Photographers and artists know the superpower of color—it’s like emotional Wi-Fi, influencing our thoughts, moods, and even what we order for dessert. Seriously, cherry or blueberry pie? Decisions, decisions! How do you use color in your life? Are you painting your walls in calming blues, or are you one of those bold types rocking bright orange accent walls? Do you drive a sleek red sports car or stick to that “invisible” silver?
Let’s take a quick dive into the psychology of the three primary colors, yellow, red and blue. Yellow evokes optimism, youthfulness and happiness, and why we instinctively chose yellow for the font color on our “Color Me Happy” photo. It’s also why sunshine gets a free pass for waking us up at ungodly hours. It’s cheerful—until it’s on your kitchen walls and makes you hungry all the time.
Bill: Now Red is the drama queen of the color world—full of energy, love, passion, and yes, a little anger. The brighter the red, the more aggressive it gets (just like me during football season—Go Dawgs!).
Sheri: Blue is the Zen master of colors. Calm, peaceful, serene...it’s why I surround myself with it at home and why we’re always drawn to the ocean. But just when I think blue is my favorite color, I spot something red and decide it’s definitely red. Then show me a bright yellow and I’m hooked on yellow. I’m a color chameleon with commitment issues—except with flowers of course: any color is perfect - a bouquet is never wasted on me!
As photographers we respond to all the colors we see around us, hoping to capture their emotional vibes in our photos--a treasure hunt for the soul. As the Russian painter and art theorist Wassily Kandinsky proclaimed, "Color is a power which directly influences the soul."
So, what’s in your color palette, a daring, passionate red, a serene, calming blue, or a little ray of sunshine yellow? Or maybe you’re just out here living in a happy yellow submarine. Whatever your palette, embrace it. Life is better in full color.
