Sheri: Not long after Bill and I first met, we began singing and entertaining together. Performing our favorite folk and classic soft rock tunes and mash ups, we soon created our own “Sheri & Bill” sound. And as I continued to write original songs, we began arranging them and adding them into our performance sets as well.  (You can check out all our original recorded music on our Sheri & Bill YouTube channel)

A couple years into this process, Bill and I decided to attend a songwriter conference in Chicago, hoping it might inspire us both on our singer/songwriting journey. We traveled with our songwriter friends Rob and Laura Kuhlman from Root Cellar Music Studio, and we all enjoyed an inspiring weekend of songwriting workshops and music mingling.

But trying to sleep that first night was another story…impossible! The El train was directly outside our 10th floor window, and I was not a city girl used to traffic noise, let alone a train in the sky! What a racket!

Finally, after tossing and turning for several hours, I started to be lulled by the rhythm of the train, and soon I felt surrounded by a soothing, rhythmic hug. I thought about what it would be like to be lonely living in the city, and yet comforted by all the familiar city sounds around me.

As lyrics and melody began swirling in my head, I quickly found the flashlight I had stowed away in my suitcase and grabbed pencil and paper, trying not to wake up Bill who was sleeping soundly next to me. By the time Bill woke up the next morning, he was quite surprised to discover I had created “Missing You” in its entirety during the night—a song which would eventually become one of our favorites.

We first recorded and released “Missing You” on our 2016 EP “Of Life and Love”.  We used our favorite recording team with Rob Kuhlman at Root Cellar Music Studio, and drummer Larry Blewitt, but I felt we had overlooked something in the recording process. I finally realized what I wanted was a sax to bring in that lonely sound!

Thanks to Norman Frank we quickly captured the missing sound and just a few months later, we re-released this song as a single “Missing You (with Vocal and Sax).” Then this song found its permanent home on our album “Connections” in the fall of 2019.

  MISSING YOU

Sounds of the city night keep calling out to me…

Streaks across the darkened sky, neon signs flash rhythmically.

I hear the constant surging, as the El Train presses on…

Soothed by the sound I stand outside, just before the dawn.

And thoughts of you swirl endlessly!

I see your face in front of me!

Wish you were near….wish you were here.

Missing you … missing you … missing you … missing you!

Daylight hours on city streets, I search each passing crowd.

A glimpse of you, your smiling face, I call your name out loud!

So many faces all around, it’s you I want to see.

I join the crowd and board the train….City comforts me!

And thoughts of you swirl endlessly!

I see your face in front of me!

Wish you were near….wish you were here.

Missing you … missing you … missing you … missing you!

And I wonder:

Do You, ever think of us!

Do You, ever miss my touch!

I focus on, the soothing sounds,

Of city life …all around!

And thoughts of you swirl endlessly!

I see your face in front of me.

Wish you were near….wish you were here.

Missing you … missing you … missing you … missing you!
